Longman Dictionary of English Idioms(p.28)上对这条谚语的解释是“The relationship between people of the same family is stronger than other, relationships”因此,这则谚语似可以借用汉语中一句俗语“亲不亲一家人”来译更能表达出“属于同一血缘关系的一家人比别人更亲近一些”的寓意。

Pride comes before a fall.

Amiss is as good as a mile.

Two is company, but three is none.

Walls have ear.

Enough is as good as a feast.

Two can play the game.

Newbroom sweeps clean.

Speak of the devil, and he appears.

The grass is greener on the other side of the hill.

Putting the cart before the horse.

People who live in glass houses should not throw stones.

In fair weather prepare for the foul.

Murder will out.

Fools rush in where angels fear to tread.

One cannot make an omelette without breaking eggs.

God helps those who help themselves.

Money is the root of all evil.

An empty sack cannot stand upright.

Do as you would be done by.

Don’t do unto others what you don’t want others do unto you.“己所不欲勿施于人”很相似。

Money talks.

You may take a horse to the water, but you can’t make it drink.

此外,还有“to be in hot/deep water”(陷入困境),“draw water in one’s own mill”(谋取私利),“make one’s mouth water”(使某人垂涎)等。

所以中国人常说的“他像松柏一样坚强”,如果在交际中直译为“He is as strong as a pine tree or a cypress”,就会给外国听者造成很大困扰。 在英国的谚语中,“Every dog has his day.”(每个人都有幸运日。)

究竟是哪种羊?”,“Chinese New year Manchester:Is it the Year of the Ram/Sheep or Goat?”。

汉语中的“明枪易躲,暗箭难防”,就可以直接根据其字面意思翻译成“It’s easy to dodge an open attack but difficult to escape from a clandestine one.”。又如“凡事总有个开头”,可以直接翻译“Everything must have a beginning.”;“一回生,二回熟”,可直译为“Different the first time, easy the second.”,等等。

如“路遥知马力,日久见人心”,可直译为“As a long road tests a horse’s strength,so a long task proves a person’s heart.”,也可意译为“Time reveals a person’s heart.”。

又如“人不可貌相”,可以意译成“Don’t judge a book by its cover.”

因此可以意译为“What one loses on the swings one gets back on the roundabouts.”,这样一来,既能正确表达出源语的意思,又能让听者一听即明了。
