Dear Mr. Seaton,
Thank you very much for taking me with you on that splendid outing to London. It was the first time that I had seen the Tower or any of the other famous sights. If I'd gone alone, I couldn't have seen nearly as much, because I wouldn't have known my way about.
The weather was splendid on that day, which I thought was rare.() I still remember some people told me that in Britain there was weather and no climate. During the same day, it might snow in the morning, rain at noon, shine in the afternoon and be windy before the night falls. So I think I was lucky.
I think the river trip was the best thing of all. London really came alive for me as we saw it from the Thames during that wonderful journey down to Greenwich. It was all tremendously exciting - a day that I shall never forget.
Thank you for giving me such a great birthday treat.
Yours sincerely,
Linda Chen
Dear Mr. Wang:
Thank you for taking the time to write your wonderful letter in support of MCEA (Maywood Chinese Education Association)。 Your letter clearly articulates all the major reasons children in Maywood will benefit from studying the Chinese language as part of their elementary school education. It provides invaluable support that will help making bilingual Chinese education a reality in Maywood public schools.
Although MCEA would like to see Palo Alto public schools implement the first bilingual Chinese kindergarten class in September of 2006, we have learned that the school district must take the time to understand how a new program will affect existing educational offerings, and to validate community interest. Nevertheless, MCEA, with more than 70 members, will continue to actively promote bilingual Chinese education in the Palo Alto public schools and will keep you apprised of the progress we make.
Thanks again for sending a letter in support of MCEA. We' will continue to do all we can to realize this program both for families of Chinese descent and those with a general interest in participating in the growing economic power of China.
Yours sincerely
George Chen

Dear Xiaowei,
It’s been weeks since we last talked. I miss you very much.
Being far awayfromhome, I am always thinking about you and our parents. I wanted to go home earlier last month, but later I didn’t because of the bad weather.
Last week, I called home when mum talked about you with me. Obviously she worried about you very much because you didn’t follow her advice. I know the reasons, but I don’t understand why you were so stubborn at that time. You could simply pretendto obey her, but not make her worried all the time. You should have known that she is so vulnerable and she is so weak. In fact, I always worry about mum’s health and avoid making her worried.
Recently, I am thinking about the coming future of our family. Next year, I am going to Beijing for graduate study in the Institute of Computing Technology, Chinese Academy of Sciences. There are no tuitions there and I won’t have to pay for the residency.
Yours
Li Hua

Dear XX,
These days general computer skills are a general requirement for professional staff. A lot of computer experts are self-taught. Having said that, we have some IT support here in Melbourne, although I normally don't ask them for any help throughout the entire year because you need to fill in a lot of request forms just to get them over to help.
I can understand the frustration of the lack of IT support in Fengshan. That is perhaps another reason why you'll need to rely on yourself. I remember a remark by a respected home-matefromGuilin, who used to be a very high-ranking official with Chiang Kai-Sek (Jiang Jieshi) in Taiwan, and who helped me a lot when I first arrived in Australia in 1987. She said to me: “Always bear in mind that you are the only person in the world that can help yourself. Don't count on others.” This remark gave me a lot of strength and courage to go on to achieve what I have achieved so far. I think this would apply to you.
I'll try to find some books for you, good ones that you can readfromtime to time. These days there are a number of good books on the web, but we need to find that. Books are relatively affordable in China. In Australia, books are terribly expensive. A book will normally cost about 100 Australia dollars. So each time when I go back to China for fieldwork, I would buy some books and bring them back to Australia. If you need any particular booksfromChina, I can ask Luo Jie of Uncle Li in Beijing (Little Uncle's classmate, who is also a good friendof mine) to get them for you. But I'll definitely try and find some book for youfromAustralia, too.
How is your laptop? Is it still working? I'll see if I could get hold of one for you when I go to Beijing in November.
Best wishes,
Uncle
